Self Care Is Not Optional

Self Care is Not Optional

Sometimes we need to remember that the stories from others are not our own. Combating that happens when we learn to care for ourselves.

In today’s saturated world of up to date media, we have to honor who we are and respectfully put down the remote or stop surfing the web. The horror stories of terrorism and violence across the globe has been plastered all over social media and our TV sets. It floods our minds, causes fear and self doubt. It shows up in unexpected ways in the the therapy room too.

As a therapist I put a lot of myself into my sessions. I empathize with my clients, listen to their life stories, and go to bat for them when they need me to be their advocate.

At the end of the day I love my job. I love being a therapist and helping others. It is truly one of the best things in the world!

Yet, somedays I get tired and live in the shadow of burnout.

What happens to empaths when we lose who we are and forget to take care of ourselves in the process of helping others?

For me, a lot of the time I just need to breathe. I need to remember that the stories from my clients are not my own. I can feel for them and love them, but I can not take their stories with me. Their journey is not my path to follow. Just like my journey is not theirs.

So what can we do? How can we stay present in our lives whether you’re a therapist or not?

It’s simple: self care.

Self care is any intentional actions or activities you take to care for your physical, mental and
emotional health.
It is what makes you feel good and centered. Self care doesn’t have to be grandiose. You can take five minutes out of your day to stretch or walk around. Or you can make it extra special and go do something extravagant. Possibilities are endless.

What is most important is remembering that you are important. You deserve to take a step back. It’s crucial. Whatever you end up doing, do it for yourself. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
