Strength in Tears: Dawn Among the Stars and Breaking Stereotyes

Repeat this with me: TEARS DO NOT ASK PERMISSION.

I’ve worked with some amazing therapists and community members throughout my career, but recently I worked with an editor that threw me for a loop. She told me, flat out, that men do not cry and that my characters could not be strong if they cried at all. “I don’t want to see a single female character cry––that is not strength,” she said.

In today’s video, I talk about what it means to me to be strong and how showing any kind of vulnerability is powerful and takes someone completely comfortable with their emotional state to showcase it.

And don’t let anyone tell you any differently.

I will not share the name of the editor I talk about in the video. I will, however, share an excellent resource and friend that can help you being your writing to life that is inclusive and compassionate. She’s WOKE, y’all!
